Bloggers I Love: Becca, Ladyface Blog
I don’t remember how I stumbled across Ladyface Blog, but I can tell you that as soon as I did, I was in love. Not only does Becca have a wonderful retro-modern sense of style, but she also posts mouthwatering recipes, inspiring DIY’s, and (occasionally) adorable pictures of her two cats. I can’t resist cats, you guys! And to add to all of that, she is incredibly sweet AND she lives in my home state. I am so excited to introduce her to any of you who have never hopped over to Ladyface Blog, and to get to know her better with those of you who have! (P.S. Click on any picture to be taken to that post!)
1. You recently reached your 100th post on Ladyface Blog (congratulations!). What inspired you to start blogging?
I was inspired to start blogging for a few reasons. One was that I had honestly gotten really lazy about doing projects. I was rarely cooking, rarely crafting, sewing, etc. I thought blogging would be a great way to inspire me to get back into those things and also to keep me accountable so I would actually do those awesome things on a regular basis. I also wanted a place where I could share my know-how, and create a positive space to do so.
2. Tell us a little of what you do outside the blog!
Well, outside of the blog, I work full time (more or less) as an Administrative Assistant for a really sweet (hint hint) company in Seattle. Beyond that, I listen to a ton of music and hang out with my friends and family (and my cats) quite a bit. I also LOVE vintage shopping, farmers markets, crafting, and all sorts of tasty food. These things obviously play into my blog on a regular basis!
3. Your outfit posts are always SO adorable; what inspires you the most with your outfits?
Well, shucks! Thanks! I really love retro silhouettes, so my outfits are almost always inspired by mid-century (let’s say 40s-60s) fashion in one way or another. I always like to play with color, pattern, and texture, as well as pretty prints and cute little details. This fall I feel like I’ve been rocking a look I call the “Cute Librarian” look.
4. If you could live in any one style era other than the present, which would it be and why?
Oh golly, there’s no doubt in my mind that I would pick the late 50s/early 60s. The construction and details on the clothing from that era are impeccable! I also love that the silhouettes tending towards a fit and flair look, which tends to be most flattering on my body.
5. Did you go through a style phase that you look back on and roll your eyes(I did. I was such a nerdy 11 year old)?
Ahahaha! Did I! Lady, I was a mess. I wore flannel and leggings (with matching scrunchies) in the 5th grade, super preppy teeny-bopper outfits in the 7th grade, verged on goth with those gigantic-legged jeans and ball chain necklaces in the 8th and 9th grade, rocked kind of a hippie look in the 10th grade, and then started to settle into a style I’m not ashamed of with jeans and band t’s in my late high school years. I think I really came into my own once I got brave enough to start wearing dresses. Total game changer! Despite my many many styles, I’ve been pretty well settled into my current look for a good 5 or 6 years now.
6. Along with your fantastic outfits, you also post delicious recipes: if you haven’t gotten them from a cookbook, how do you come up with the recipes?
Well, that all depends! There are lot of things that you are just easy to make up, like soups, stews, etc. If I’m newer to an idea, I tend to think about what sorts of flavors I think would really sing together, and then do a good internet scour to confirm my idea for cooking methods and amounts. A good example of that would be for a fruit crisp, where I’ve got the whole thing down, but always forget how much cornstarch to use!
I often try to use cookbooks as a way to become familiar with different cooking methods and then take them and run with it! I think practice is really key when it comes to cooking.
7. What is your comfort food?
As a general rule, something cheesy. Reeeeeal cheesy. Also ice cream.
8. You’re also a DIY maven, and post SO many things I swear I’ll make one day(but I know I never will). Have you always been crafty?
I haven’t always done so many crafts, but as far as I can remember, I’ve always been craftily inclined! As a kid I always LOVED choosing any arts and crafts options for school projects. I made tons of dioramas and puppets and things like that. Outside of school I went through a phase of making candles (I was 8. Ha!), I made stuffed animals out of sweatshirts, I put puff-paint on EVERYTHING, and eventually learned how to sew.
I actually went to college for fashion design. I think that experience really helped me be able to think about how to put things together, and also really increased the skill in which I could create things with my own hands. While I ultimately decided not to pursue fashion as a career, I think it definitely had a big influence on my life and on my creative abilities.
9. What is your favorite pastime?
Tough! I’d say listening to music and doing crossword puzzles. Also cooking and crafting, obviously. Can you tell I’m bad at choosing favorites?
10. I’m going to guess you’re a cat person because of your adorable cats Buddy and Hank (yes?). Do you have any other favorite animals, or have you owned other pets?
Total cat person. My family had cats when I was growing up, but Buddy and Hank are the first pets I’ve had on my own. They are totally the best and charm every person who meets them. They’re the sweetest, goofiest little guys!
11. You live in Seattle, Washington, which is obviously the best place ever (I might be prejudiced); what are your favorite city haunts?
Tough call! I can be found pretty regularly at Trove Vintage in Ballard and Lucky Vintage in the U District, since I love my vintage shops! I also love hanging out at dive-y bars in Ballard like The Tin Hat and Hattie’s Hat (apparently hats are a theme here. Huh.), and regularly frequent the farmers markets around town.
12. And finally, what is the best blogging advice you could give, or have ever been given?
Ooooh, good question! I honestly haven’t received much blogging advice myself, but my biggest piece of advice is to be yourself on your blog! I think if you can play to your strengths, share things you love, and try to write in your own voice, it really helps people engage with you and want to follow along.
I would also say, if you’re interested in blogging, just do it. I actually put it off starting a blog for a good two years before I actually did it. I was incredibly intimidated when because it’s a scary thing to put yourself out there for the whole world to see! Taking that scary step is totally worth it though, because since entering the blogging world, I have been completely blown away by the kindness and support I’ve received from the people in the blogging community. It’s been a really amazing experience so far and I’m really happy to have blogging as a part of my daily life.
So as you can see, Becca is adorable, talented, and someone I totally blog-stalk every day. So you MUST go check out Ladyface Blog, if you haven’t already! Thank you so much for being my interviewee, Becca!
Lots of love, Kristina
