Mom Jeans
This weekend, I finally decided that it was time to move out of the ever-so-comfortable maternity jeans and into real, made-for-a-woman jeans — as in, not the low-cut skinny jeans currently filling my drawers. You know, the ones that aren’t made for a girl with rather curvaceous thighs and a plentiful bum, and thus show some skin whenever you bend over or sit down? Yeah. I should probably toss those. But I love the colors.
Anyway! So I went jeans shopping. And I discovered two weird things: one, Kohl’s doesn’t seem to be able to make jeans that don’t have a lot of junk on the back pockets, or jeans that actually have structure– seriously, every pair of normal jeans I found? Total cheap-feeling jegging-type material. Not flattering.
And two, Target jeans are weird but wonderful. See, I tried this pair on in both long length and regular length, because it used to be that longs were just right for wearing heels with, and regulars were a tad too short for me. I tried the long size on first, and discovered that it fit perfectly — no gapping at the back (#curvygirlproblems), no odd bunching in the crotch, fitted nicely to my leg down to the knee, not too wide at the bottom. The only issue was the length– somewhere past my toes. So I figured hey… I don’t need to try on the regular length; I’ll just grab a pair in the same size and fit with a regular inseam and be good, right?
Well. Wrong. I saw a shirt I liked, and since I had the regular length jeans with me, I figured I’d better be safe than sorry and try them on.
And even though they were the exact same fit, leg, and size… they gapped at the back, bunched weirdly at the crotch, and were way too wide at the bottom.
I don’t get it.
This is why us women hate shopping for jeans.
But hey, with a little hemming (thanks mom!) I now have the perfect pair of jeans! Of course, since I’ve got a… *ahem* womanly figure, the rise is very nearly up to my belly button. And the first thing my husband said when I twirled to show him the awesome new jeans was “are those mom jeans?”
To which I replied “Yes. They are. Because I am a mom, and they are my jeans.” (He was joking.)
I’m not too fond of higher rise jeans solely because they tend to cut across my belly pooch in a weird place. That’s the only reason I ever purchased low-cut jeans; they didn’t squash my belly in an odd place. But I’ll sacrifice for jeans that flatter my figure and don’t reveal anything when I sit down; it’s a small price to pay! Plus, they might look cute with a blousy shirt tucked in; I like the higher rise in terms of proportion!
This is the first pair of jeans I have felt legitimately awesome in in years! I mean, aside from while pregnant, when I had the belly to even out my butt-to-bust proportions. For those of you curious, they’re from Target and they are the long bootcut curvy fit.
So, that’s pretty much the most exciting thing that has happened to me lately. Sometimes, all a mama needs to be happy is a good pair of jeans and the perfect shade of red lipstick. I have yet to find a better lippy than this one: I don’t think it’s out any more, sadly! It was Revlon’s Kate Moss lipstick in 01.

Actually, that’s not the most exciting thing: we’re going to move next month, hopefully! Our lease on our current house is up on April 30 (and somehow I always manage to move right around my birthday, which is on the 27th), so we’re looking for a bigger, baby-proofable house with actual divided rooms and a bathtub. Right now we live in a two-story two room house (well, three if you count the bathroom as a room.) that we’re pretty sure used to be a very small barn. It’s pretty cramped! The kitchen, living room, dining room, laundry, and bathroom are in the downstairs room, and the upstairs is our bedroom/office area/nursery alcove.
We’re also really hoping we can find somewhere with slightly cheaper rent, since I work a bit less now that I’ve got a baby to take care of, and insurance rates have gone up.
I hope you are all having a lovely Tuesday!
And I almost forgot: you’ve still got a little bit of time to enter the flower pin giveaway! It ends at midnight tonight Pacific time, and I’ll announce the winner soon thereafter! So hop on in and enter before it’s too late!

Those jeans fit you like a dream! And that cardigan looks so fun too.

You’re welcome, Sweetie! I know how much you love sewing! : ) Even though I know you know how to sew, I love doing it for you and your sister-in-law. Love language and all, hee hee. I am so happy you found a jean that fits so well! You look gorgeous in them.

You always make me laugh and the only thing worse than buying jeans is a bra. The last time I tried on bras at a certain JCP and leaving empty handed, I asked the clerk if they offered counseling services. Coldwater Creek, (I know for old ladies), make a curvy, mini boot cut lower rise, but not too low jean. I only buy them on sale. I guess I kinda also feel like your mom and I would hem your jeans too. And she is right, you look gorgeous in them!!

Good luck with your move! I hope you find an awesome new place. Also these jeans look awesome on you. I love that dark wash. It’s very flattering! I prefer the proportions of high rise jeans too. It just makes a person look taller!

I hate shopping for pants. I have all the opposite problems it seems like you do, but it boils down to the same frustrating experience! >.<
Good luck searching for a new house! I have to agree that it sounds like your current situation is not set up for baby owl… keep us up-to-date!

I’ll take jean shopping over bra or swim wear shopping any day! Funny, the jeans I’ve found that I like the most are the Lifestyle brand from Khol’s. I haven’t tried Target jeans, but I’m curious after reading your post whether I might like them better. Thanks for sharing what type of red lipstick you use, maybe I can find some for resale on Ebay if they don’t offer it in stores any more. 🙂 Congrats on the upcoming move!
