Take Me to the Zoo

1 11

Focusing more on writing this week has been interesting so far. I don’t want to say too much, because I plan to talk about it in my vlog at the end of the week, but I’ve been re-reading Sweet Ireland Air so that I can get back into the characters and finish the book… and I’ve realized I’m very much not a collaborator.

I’ll expound on that more in my vlog later… but let’s just say it becomes a surprisingly touchy subject when my husband (out of love for ideas and excitement) starts to suggest ways I can change the story.

But I’ve never been very good at taking someone else’s idea and running with it. I like my own ideas. I like writing about things out of my head, because… they’re mine? I plan to talk a lot about this in the vlog, so I won’t say more.

I’m just stubborn and bad at accepting constructive input from people I know, ha!

7 So can we talk about how fantastic this skirt is and the fact that I got it for under a dollar… and it still had the tags attached? Yeah. Best. Find. Ever. Seriously. My local St. Vincent has a day where as much clothing as you can fit in a bag is only $3. So I got that jumpsuit, this skirt, and 5 silky scarves for a steal!

I also have to talk about this adorable giraffe shirt from Oasap, because first: giraffes in top hats! Secondly, I quite like the quality of it… but my one beef is that the measurements given are definitely off. My bust measurement is currently 40″ with a bra, but online it says the medium — which I got on the hopes it would fit — has a bust of 35″. And it actually fits me perfectly and is a bit looser around the waist than I like. But it’s a comfortable tee and the looser fit makes it more flattering with jeans, so I’m ok with that.

I also really love this bag! My last purse was also from Oasap, and I used it so much the straps wore out, so it was high time to find another one! I have a hard time committing to purses; I want bags that will go with whatever I’m wearing unless it’s an evening look because it’s too much trouble for me to switch out my purse every time I wear a new outfit. So I wasn’t finding anything for the longest time until I saw this pretty snap-top bag online.

I plan to do a “What’s in my purse” post with it, because seriously… I can fit a book in this purse, you guys. A book! Best purse ever!

Such a cute skirt! I seriously need to check out the thrift shops out your way. Also, I think we might be just about the same size, so if you ever do put some of those skirts up for sale, I’m going to be all over it!
Glad to hear you’ve been getting back into writing. I can’t wait to hear more about it!

That shirt is adorable and I want it. And that skirt is amazing too!

I really need to get back into writing too (scripts – I have at least two that I need to outline – . my prose is not good enough for novels) but my problem is the opposite of yours. I have a bunch of ideas swirling around and I always have to ask somebody for their opinion on which is the best. I guess that comes from being a writing student, where every step in your entire writing process is up for criticism.

I like the skirt! I think that length looks great on you. I love the second to last picture. 😉

I totally understand how you don’t want others to give you ideas. I don’t like that either! Like when you read reviews on FP and someone has said “you should make such-and-such happen.” Um, what? Let the author write what the author wants to write! In fact, not only do I think the author doesn’t have to accept these suggestions but the author shouldn’t accept them because 1) the author knows things about the story that the reader doesn’t know, and 2) it kind of feels like cheating/stealing to deliberately use someone else’s ideas and then call it your own story (even if it’s 95% your own ideas).

On the other hand, constructive criticism is a different story (pardon the pun) and is very important to accept. If a reader thinks there’s something wrong with the story that needs fixing, it’s not a good idea to say “eh, whatever, this is how I want to do it” unless you’re really not serious about it (like it’s a short story that you wrote on a whim and have no interest going back to). If the reader has a problem with some aspect of your story, likely it needs editing. And what Salazar said I would say is closer to constructive criticism than the type of suggestions I mentioned above because the readers aren’t suggesting new ideas that Salazar has not thought of but are simply advising her on the ideas she already has.

Basically, what I’m saying is there are two types of reader input, the first of which you should totally ignore and the second of which you should listen to. So you say you’re bad at accepting constructive input, but honestly, I think you’re fine because what you’re describing seems to me like the first category!

That skirt is fabulous!! Oh, so scrumptious! I’m really liking your handbag too. Cute look! Input from others when it comes to our creative work, is a hard balancing act. I have learned and grown so much in writing by accepting criticism and input from others, even though it brought me to tears often times. Details sometimes aren’t as important as we think, as long as we stay true the message of what we are putting out there. Plus, I find it helpful to see things through another person’s point of view- after all, we have everything clear and laid out in our mind, but it doesn’t always translate that way onto paper, and hearing how someone else receives and perceives it helps us see the gaps where we have assumed something is understood, when really it isn’t. Best of luck as you start into writing again!!
