Tim Burton’s Dumbo
Last week, we went to see Tim Burton’s Dumbo, and of course I had to make a skirt for the occasion! I’ve had this vintage Walt Disney Dumbo sheet for about a year now, and was always a bit too afraid to cut into it. Since it was a twin sheet, I only had enough fabric for one go at making the perfect little skirt. Thankfully, as you can see, it all turned out well! I finally remembered to add pockets — something I often neglect when I make things — and it’s the first skirt I’ve made myself with a zipper. Usually, I put in buttons or, lazily, just close it with safety pins.
Now that I’ve made this skirt I have been itching to dig into my vintage fabrics and make more things. Next on the roster is perhaps a Beauty and the Beast dress, or a replica of a gorgeous 1950’s dress I bought that doesn’t fit me. It has the prettiest pleats and amazing details on the bust, pockets, and everything a girl could want in a dress!

As for Dumbo, I loved it! I know Tim Burton isn’t to everyone’s taste, but I think that his style was super toned down in Dumbo. It had just enough of that eclectic flair I personally love while still being a classic. I loved that they put hints of the original cartoon into the movie still — the opening song, the Baby of Mine sequence — while still going with a more original plot. It wasn’t really complicated or clever, but it worked! And I have to say I think the casting was all around great.
Have you seen Dumbo? What did you think?
