Giving Thanks
This was my Thanksgiving outfit. I am thankful for twirly skirts, a certain dashing man, and the fact that I’m going to be a married woman in eleven days and I have yet to lose my mind. Although there have been a few emotional breakdowns.
But seriously, you guys… I’m going to be married in a week and five days. That is… insane. And exciting. And scary (responsibilities like never before! But the thought of being married to Mr. Owl forever isn’t scary. Just thought I’d clarify). And sometimes overwhelming. And ultimately amazing.
And this was the part of the shoot where I tried to strike a model pose and ended up looking like a flasher.
Classy.
There was also one where I unintentionally flipped off the camera. But I won’t show you guys that one. I have dignity sometimes.
Also: in seventeen days, I will be married, in Hawaii, watching The Hobbit on an Imax screen in 3D. Anyone jealous yet?
Yeah. You should be.
So today I have lots of to-dos to finish– write thank-you cards, finish the cake toppers, pack a few boxes to take over to our new house (weird. Mr. Owl and I have a house. That won’t sink in until we actually live there), write up a menu for when we get back from our honeymoon, start packing a honeymoon suitcase… and lots more. I can’t believe I only have one week of work left before I get married. Week after next, I’ll be in Hawaii.

The “Hobbit on IMAX in 3D” part certainly makes me jealous!
Love how you wear the brooch in your hair too – so pretty.

Congrats!!!! Hubby and I have been married for 12 years. He is STILL my best friend.
A good friend of mine gave me this advice when I was about to be married. It’s some of the best advice I’ve ever received, PERIOD. “You’re going to have days where you’re going to think, ‘I wish he would just go home,’ but he can’t go home…he’s already there.” 🙂
Marriage isn’t like being in a movie. It’s not perfect. Sometimes, it’s downright messy! But, if you can hold onto your friendship, talk about your hopes and fears, and find time to date one another…marriage can be beautiful thing. I love my hubby more now, than I did when we were first dating, and that friend of mine…yeah, she and her hubby are still happily together after nearly 30 years of marriage!
Marriage is about creating a home, a place of refuge for you and your partner. There’s no room for perfectionism or nagging in your sanctuary. (I learned this lesson the hard way!) It’s about socks that don’t always make it into the hamper, and dishes that don’t always make it to the dishwasher. It’s about accepting each other, flaws and all, and continually moving forward. It’s about accepting that you’re GOING to have to have to share his time with inanimate objects, be it the car he’s tinkering with, the video game he’s obsessed with, or whatever…and that’s OK. You KNOW exactly where he is. He’s not going anywhere. 😉 Use this time to do the things that YOU love to do, and don’t feel guilty about it. Even though you’re married, you’re two individual people. You both need you’re own things and time to veg out and unwind from your day.
Hubby and I discovered we had lots of “new” hobby’s we could do together, once I stopped worrying/nagging about the time he was investing in his video games and whatnot. Instead of me asking him to get off the computer, he’d stop on his own, because he wanted to know what “I” was working on, be it a sewing project, gardening, photography…and wanted to join me. That was huge! Hubby signed us up for a quilting class, because he thought my hobby looked like something he might enjoy. My hubby is built like a football player. HIS quilt is on our bed. 🙂 LOL If I could redo ANYTHING about our first year of marriage, I would have stopped obsessing over the amount of time he spent on HIS hobbies, and spent more time working on my own hobbies. It’s easy for women to forget their hobbies once they get married and have children. It’s too easy to let go of the things that make us happy because they seem frivolous. I’ve known women who feel as though they lost their identity after marriage, because women without hobbies turn people into their hobby, and NO ONE befits from that. Our hobbies keep things interesting, and interesting people are fun to be around!
In a nutshell, marriage is about letting go of all the “stuff” that doesn’t matter and sharing what’s important to you. It’s about growing up and becoming the person you were meant to be. But the BEST part about marriage, instead of growing alone, you have your best friend, right there beside you, encouraging you when you need it, and if you’re lucky, holding you’re hand, and pushing you in the right direction when you lose your way on the path to your dreams.
I wish you an abundance of joy and happiness during this next phase of your life!!! 🙂

Oh, Juli, this is such great advice! I loved reading your comment, and I definitely know that what you say is true. I’m so thankful and blessed by your advice!

as a newlywed, i’m unbelievably excited for you and your upcoming marriage. i mean, dating was fun, but marriage is like this special present that’s always surprising and exciting. i love being married. and i’m so excited for others to feel that fresh excitement of being in love and making a forever commitment.
i have no advice – i think juli did a good job of saying what needs to be said. fortunately, i learned the hobby lesson sooner than later. 🙂 and, i admit, sometimes it’s nice when he wants to play video games or watch youtube videos because it gives me some down time to breathe a bit.
i wish you and mr. owl all the happiness in the world, an incredible honeymoon that fills your cup, and a marriage that lasts forever, past the good and bad. may the Lord bless you both and the commitment you make before him!

You, my dear, look lovely. I can’t believe your wedding is creeping up so quickly! I do not have a tome to present you this time because I haven’t even had a relationship let alone been married. I’ll just tell you that you sure are purdy and wish you all the best! (:

Love the dress and tights, but ADORE the coat! Also that picture with the jeweled comb (or whatever) is stunning!

LOVE your Thanksgiving outfit. Fits you to perfection. In other news, your plans are so exciting, especially because I can relate… 😀 (Got married today at the notary; in a week we’re flying to Mauritius for the religious ceremony and honeymoon.)

Uuuurgh just shut up girl, I’m MAD jealous 😀 You’re marrying the love of your life, packing a suitcase to go on the most romantic holiday of your life and you look like a dreamboat. Can’t wait for the wedding and honeymoon pictures, though! THE WEDDINGDRESS, SO CURIOUS! This thanksgiving dress is beautiful too and I’m in love with the houndstooth flats. And the coat. You basically just look gorgeous.
