The Brooch Girl
Back when I was a barista, many of my customers knew me as the brooch girl, because I was always wearing the various pins that I have been collecting. One regular even bought me three brooches he found while out and about running errands (I was his favorite. He was a sweet old man who always made jokes and liked my coffee the best, and he would sit and talk until he was forced to leave by another customer driving up). But somehow, it seems like lately I’ve stopped wearing brooches even though I keep grabbing them at thrift stores.
I think a big part of that has to do with the fact that I’m still trying to figure out where I want my style to go. I’ve been wanting to stick to a certain aesthetic ever since I started fashion blogging, but I haven’t quite found my niche yet. I love vintage clothing, but I also love modern pieces, and mixing the two is hard!
I’ve been thinking lately that I Â might start a list of all the things I would like my style to incorporate, and maybe that will help me figure out what I want to wear. I also need to add more basics to my wardrobe, because right now it’s just a jumble of prints and dresses that I can only wear one way. I love October Rebel’s post about curating a successful wardrobe; it’s the first post about adding basics to your wardrobe that actually applied really well to me. I’m not a businesswoman, so all of the “you must have one blazer, one pair of black slacks, one pencil skirt” type posts just never hit it with me.
The cat photobombed me. I love him.
Even though he killed the baby birds in our back yard.
I mean, look at him! Isn’t he just hte cutest, fluffiest, prettiest kitty ever? And he purrs like nobody’s business. I wish we could keep him here, but at least he’s the neighbors and comes over all the time because he used to live where we are now. And he thinks our house is still his. He tried to come in this morning when I left for work.
This week has been a long one with working full time. I will love having the bigger paycheck, but I cannot wait for my coworker to get back so I can go back to normal hours (for me!). I’m really not a full-time worker, especially not with blogging, housekeeping, cooking, and all the other stuff I have to do in a day. I’m just not cut out for it. I get so emotional and stressed!
Is anyone else like that? I think sometimes I’m just too softhearted, and in my line of work occasionally we deal with less-than-happy customers (usually through no fault of our own, just because they’re unhappy to begin with, having a ruined house and dealing with insurance and subcontractors and who knows who else) that take out their stress on me. It turns me into a mess when I talk to those people!
I have great coworkers, though, who understand and step in when I get overwhelmed.
I’m so happy that tomorrow is Friday. So, so happy. I can’t wait for the weekend to relax and get the house cleaned up and buy food (I love food).
By the way, how do you guys like my new blog design? I was itching for something spring-y, and I FINALLY figured out how to center the menu with the help of my computer-geek friend (thank you, Mick!) so it now looks more orderly.
Target: Shirt
Modcloth: Shoes
Thrifted/Vintage: Skirt, Â belt, brooch
I hope you all have a beautiful Thursday!

You’re right, this outfit would’ve been perfect for SIA! And I totally hear ya about mixing modern and vintage pieces. I’m still figuring it out myself, but I think you hit a right balance between modern and vintage here.
Btw, that cat? Yeah he is fluffy, but he also looks like he’s plotting to torture and kill someone (a baby bird?) in his mind so… no. Even my crazy cat lady heart is wary of him 😛

True story. I was scanning your post and I was like “Dang. She is so so right!” about the pencil skirt/slacks thing, and *then* I saw you had mentioned my post. Thanks for the link, I am so so glad that post may have sparked an idea. I think you’ve mixed vintage and modern here really well! You have great style. 🙂
Kitty photo bombs are the best!

Oooo, looove the new look! (both the blonde, and the blog) 🙂 Maybe that’s what I need to get back into the blogging groove; a new layout! I’ll fiddle around tonight and see what comes of it.

You can’t go wrong mixing primary colors in an outfit! I love the pattern on your skirt and those cute shoes. The brooch is a really cute accessory. You can definitely incorporate those into a modern wardrobe too. Just pin them on a jacket or cardigan! I think you do a nice job mixing vintage and modern clothes too. It’s easiest for me to just think of all of my clothes as clothes instead of thinking in terms of modern and vintage. If an outfit I like ends up all vintage or all new, so it is! You don’t have to stick to one strict style anyway. It’s nice to mix things up!
