Vampire quality

Do you ever have those days where you feel so confident that you start making tons of faces in your outfit pictures, and end up with several that crack you up?

This was one of those days. In half of my pictures, I’m making weird faces. But hey, we’ll just go with it; I generally do laugh and make faces more than acting all serious-fashion-blogger-y in real life.

You guys know I’m cool. Haha!

Seriously, though, I love this outfit. I felt like a (very pregnant) rockstar-vampire vixen or something. Of course, later when I changed into jeans because it’s getting way too cold for this skirt without tights (which don’t fit me any more, pouty face), then I just looked very dark. I mean, dark jeans + dark hair + black shirt + black jacket = I look goth.

So as I mentioned last week, the husband and I went to see 12 Years A Slave (linked the preview in case you’ve never heard of it), which is based on the true story of a free black man in the 1850’s who was abducted and sold into slavery for… well, 12 years.

And just in case you are wanting to see it, I will only say a few things. First off, it was intense in the way that makes you want to whisper when it’s over. Secondly, Brad Pitt is definitely not in the movie as much as the preview makes it look like he is and I don’t understand why they cast him other than having star power because he just doesn’t quite fit, to me. Thirdly, Michael Fassbender was brilliant all the way through, which surprised me because I wasn’t impressed by his Edward Rochester and Magneto isn’t really a role that can tell you whether someone’s a great actor or not. And fourthly, while I thought the movie was very good, I also recommend watching it at home with fast-forwarding capabilities if you’re like me and prefer cleaner movies, because there is some nudity (in the setting of black slaves being shown/sold, so not sexually), there is a fully clothed upper-bodies-only-shown rape scene, and there’s one other short, clothed scene in the very beginning that is sexual.

Also, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lupita Nyong’o were AMAZING. They are both among those rare actors who can really make you feel what they’re feeling, and I was so blown away. Add them to my favorites list, too.

I’ve heard a lot of reviews call the movie uncomfortable to watch, but I think uncomfortable isn’t quite the right word. I mean, yes, it’s uncomfortable to know these things happened and that humans were (and probably still are) capable of such cruelties as what went on back then, and there are scenes that you just want to end because your whole body cringes to watch them, but I think for me it was less discomfort and more… heartbreaking and painful knowing that these things really happened all the time. That there was a time when slavery was the norm, and people were treated like property to be used and beaten and tossed off however the slave owner wanted. It’s one thing to go to a museum and see the pictures, but it’s another to watch a movie knowing that the story is a real, true, personal one.

It just makes you so much more… aware of the world, of history, of the things that still exist today, of the things that have thankfully passed…

You guys will have to let me know if you decide to watch it! I really, really want to read the book now.

It’s also gotten me back into reading more history; I have always been fascinated with certain eras of history, and I miss checking out library books and discovering the past. I need to start using the library again. It’s been almost two years since I went regularly!

I almost forgot to mention (but how COULD I!) these earrings. They’re the last bit from my last package from Oasap, and I’m so in love! The color is so perfect (slowly adding to my mint collection), and they have just the perfect amount of sparkle. I’m not big on jewelry that is just all sparkle, but when it’s subtle like these, I really love it. And seriously, everything I have gotten from Oasap this time around has been instant love and wear-all-the-time. Well, actually, it’s been like that with everything I’ve ever received from Oasap. They have such cute items all the time, and they have a great wide price range for pretty much any budget.

Well, it’s Monday. I didn’t want to get up this morning, but baby owl has taken up kicking from the time Mr. Owl’s alarm goes off to the time I finally get up an hour later. It’s like he’s saying “Come on, mama, get up, it’s time to eat and play!”

I have this feeling that he is not going to be a sleeper at all. I was the up-with-the-sun child when I was little (literally, my mom had to black out the windows with heavy blankets or I would be awake and ready to play when the sun came up at 4:30am in the summer) and apparently my husband did not like going to bed, taking naps, or sleeping in. We’re basically doomed.

Unless he doesn’t take after us at all, which would be lucky.

Do any of you have fun plans for the week? Mr. Owl and I have been invited to go to a film discussion group because of our winning the 72 hour film festival last month, and that’s tonight. I plan to be incredibly nerdy and wear my new Back to the Future shirt. And then tomorrow night, we have Bible Study, Thursday we drive up to see the midwife– now that I’m in the last two months of pregnancy, I have to see her twice a month — and Friday Mr. Owl is probably going to work on getting a few more shots for another film he’s working on.

This one is just a for-fun movie, and hopefully he can get it done! He’s had a hard time rounding up the two actors he needs the most, mostly because of work.

And then sometime next weekend I will hopefully be taking my parents’ portraits, which I am excited for. I just hope we have a day of good weather for the shoot! It’s going to be a busy week.
