My modern basics for vintage style
For the longest time, my closet didn’t have basics.
I would happen upon “closet must have” lists, and nothing really appealed to me. Black slacks? A blazer? A white button up blouse? Not my style. Even things as classic as a Little Black Dress didn’t seem appropriate for me, my closet, and my lifestyle. And then recently I watched a video from The Closet Historian on her closet basics, and something clicked inside my head. For a vintage-loving gal, basics don’t have to be your usual 9-to-5 office wear. As a stay at home mom, basics are so much different. So this weekend I filmed a video of five looks, all featuring some items that I consider my closet basics. These are the things I gravitate toward on a day when I just want to throw on clothes and get out of the house but still look cute; things that are comfortable, that mix well with my wardrobe, that I can wear in a plethora of ways.
At some point I may put together my own closet basics video detailing more specifically what I have finally built up as my basic wardrobe over the years, but for now I hope you all enjoy this video! It features all modern and available today garments, styled in a vintage way. These are my closet basics. What are yours?

This first outfit probably features the most versatile basics for me: a red skirt with pockets (always, pockets!), a stretchy off the shoulder top, and comfortable shoes. My go-to styles are always a little bit elastic, easy to breastfeed in, and practical as they can be. While I love and wear vintage dresses quite often, I gravitate towards outfits like this on days when I know we’ll be doing something particularly rough or dirty. For instance, we went on a hike (yes, in this, hat and all!) and then I helped harvest tons and tons of carrots out of my mom’s garden. I got dirty, my friends. But I wasn’t afraid to do so, since this skirt and top are both ultra comfy, washable, and pretty durable.
The best thing is, this skirt and top are both available online in quite a few different options, so there’s no shortage of how you can remix this pairing!
So tell me, what are your go-to garments for easy, quick, and cute dressing?
