I started writing The Widow’s Proposal on Februa I started writing The Widow’s Proposal on February 27th 2022 and as of today it is 40,098 words long. Just 10k words short of novel-length. I’ve never written a novel this quickly (well, I did once for National novel writing month but… it wasn’t good) and I’m SO proud of all the work and research I’ve put into this.

I was hit with the idea of Ravenna and Adair like a smack with a book upside the head and as soon as I began writing about them I could. Not. Stop. Ravenna is a culmination of all the things I want to see in a heroine. She’s bold and humorous, intelligent, driven, and passionate. She knows what she wants and will do anything in her power to get it. Adair is the opposite of a lot of romance novel heroes, soft and sweet and romantic, a man who gets butterflies in his stomach and shows true emotion is nothing to be afraid of.

And, most dear to my heart, Ravenna represents a body type I’ve never read in historical romance before: full figured, but not wasp-waisted. I’ve tried to write a true plus size heroine complete with jiggles and wiggles and a thick waist and soft belly; representative of my own body and I hope touching to many others who never see themselves written as anything other than a sidekick in romantic books.

I cannot wait to share them with all of you!

I’ve been scouring the Internet for a while sear I’ve been scouring the Internet for a while searching for a good representation of how I imagine Ravenna Willoughby, my curvy Edwardian heroine of The Widow’s Proposal, to look and I think I’ve finally found her. The look! The curves!

“Lillian Russell (1860-1922) became one of the most famous actresses and singers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for her beauty and style, as well as for her voice and stage presence. “

I’m in love.
Some research for The Widow’s Proposal. My fav Some research for The Widow’s Proposal.

My favorite thing to do is research still, and I prefer physical books over Google to this day. What is your preferred method of research?
Who just reached 25,000 words in the novel she sta Who just reached 25,000 words in the novel she started writing 14 days ago? THIS GIRL.

Who also realized some house maintenance days are in order because this hyper focused writing has taken over her life? Yeah also me 😂

“Edwardian Sleeping Beauty dresses from 1912. Disintegrating ivory satin and Brussels lace dragged through brambles and white thorn hedges, pin-pricked with embroidered trails of bewitched briar roses, and finished with vine-green starched velvet ribbons. (Augusta Auctions)” via @anne_louise_avery on Twitter.

Does anyone else research actual historic outfits while writing? I live for it. These are stunning. 😭😍
A hint of inspiration for the next novel which has A hint of inspiration for the next novel which has taken me by storm as I wait for beta reader feedback on #thedevilofcalhoun.

Plus size Edwardian romance, anyone??

* PS this gal is not plus size but I like her face
The first novel I ever wrote took me four years to The first novel I ever wrote took me four years to write. I started when I was sixteen and finished when I was twenty, and it was my first foray into storytelling that I LOVED.

Back in those days I posted on a website where you could share your writing freely and people could leave reviews, add your story to best of lists, and generally critique or love what you did.

My Beloved, for the time and website, went mini-viral. I loved what I was writing and it showed. It ended up being a 200,000 word beast full of historical in accuracies and SO many errors, but I still love it and keep it in a little tim box to this day, and maybe someday I’ll revisit this story and give it the revision it badly needs and deserves.

This was the novel that made me think I could one day be good enough to publish my works.

Nearly 14 years later, I’m looking fondly back and I’m so thankful for that experience, and all of the people who read that story and encouraged me to pursue my dreams. I hope they’ll find me again, someday, so I can tell them all: thank you.
This Tartan wedding dress from 1785 is to DIE for. This Tartan wedding dress from 1785 is to DIE for. One of the things I love a lot about writing is immersing myself in the research and the rich world of everyday history. I’m not so interested in big world events, I want small things. Every day life. Real people stories.

I just finished writing The Devil of Calhoun and one of the things that I’ve noticed throughout my writing is that it’s finally reached a place where I add my own experiences into the story, and you might wonder what I could have possibly experienced that would relate to a midwife in the 18th c Scotland highlands but… well, you’ll have to find out!

Many of Caitriona’s outfits were influenced with this dress in mind. It’s later than the story setting, but ohhhh… the tartan.

I cannot believe I have finally finished this novel. Now, to edit like a madwoman and find a writing agent. I’m terrified.

Hiding my bad photoshop skills with EXCITING NEWS. Hiding my bad photoshop skills with EXCITING NEWS. I have just started writing chapter twenty of The Devil of Calhoun do you know what that means??? I’m about ten chapters, she’ll be done. Like. Ten chapters. That’s SO CLOSE. I don’t have a specific chapter or word goal in mind it’s just sort of “write and see where it ends” but for a little while I was afraid I didn’t have enough storyline to fill out the rest of the book. As it turns out, my creativity is not stopping and I’m no longer scared that I’ll run out of ideas.

This novel is THRIVING.

Anyway here’s a semi terrible photoshop of me as Caitriona in front of a vaguely Scottish castle for fun 😂😂😂
