Bang Bang
Do you ever have those days where you make a decision that you regret almost before you’ve even made it?
Today is one of those days.
As if I haven’t already done enough to my hair, I decided I wanted to trim my bangs up a bit, since I’ve decided to give the curling iron a rest for a few days (to let my hair get over the trauma of being dyed). But right as I began to cut I thought “do I really want to do this?” *snip* “too late…” Somehow, no matter how low I begin cutting my bangs, they end up much higher than I intended them to be. I wanted some just-below-the-brow bangs, but I ended up with just-above-the-brow fringe. Oops. It is just hair, and they’ll grow out, but… sometimes, a girl gets hung up on these things. I don’t really like my bangs to be super short, and I’m annoyed by them now. Definitely not the look I was going for. I’m never really satisfied with how the hairdresser does my hair, though — the last time I went, I had a pretty clear picture of what I wanted, but she still asked a million questions, and almost challenged my decisions — I wanted bangs, she urged me to do sideswept, and finally decided on her own that they shouldn’t be too thick, and she cut them at uneven thicknesses… yeah.
I do like the bangs when my hair is up; I think my face shape and features get overwhelmed if there’s too much hair going on around my face, so I have to be careful what sort of bangs I get when I have long hair. I feel so very different with the red hair! It’s amazing how you see yourself in a totally new light when you go for a different haircolor. So far I’ve felt like dressing with a bit more of an edge while still being kind of retro, and adding more modern pieces to what I wear. I feel more… creative, perhaps?
I think when I go to refresh it, I might process it one more time to get it brighter than this, but we’ll see. It looks darker in these pictures than it is in real life; depending on the light, it gets brighter and deeper. I would love to have a slightly more vibrant red; I may try one other dye that is supposed to come out even brighter than this one did, when I go back for a refresher color in a few weeks.
I’m working on that post about how I dyed my hair, since SO many people were interested to see it; hopefully it’ll be up next week! The Gig Harbor 72 Hour Film Festival starts this evening, and I am really excited for it; my husband had almost decided not to participate this year after winning last year (film here; don’t judge my bad acting, I didn’t want to or expect to act) but at the last minute he changed his mind. Hopefully the required prop/line/action will allow us to be as creative as we hope to be! I will be doing costumes and makeup as I did last year, but I really want to do MORE. If we are able to do everything we want to do (aka, be super creative and out there with the ideas we have), I should have a lot to work with! But we can’t start anything until tonight, when we get the requirements. I can’t wait!
Fun fact: I didn’t dye my eyebrows, but with some brow wax and reddish shadow, it totally looks like I did. Yay! I’m so excited to exercise my makeup/hair/costume skills. I feel like I copped out a little last year, and spent most of my time on the fairies, who didn’t have much screen time. But we didn’t actually go out to buy anything last year — all of the costumes were things we had or borrowed — and this year I plan to go to Goodwill and do a real costume search. Tomorrow is going to be a busy day! And this weekend is probably going to be crazy. We have to come up with ideas, write a script, costume, makeup, shoot, location find, edit, add music, and have the film all completed by Sunday evening.
Necklace, Target | all other items, thrifted/garage-saled. Yep. Even the bag and shoes.
I hope you all have a fantastic weekend! (Mine starts tomorrow, since I’ve taken the day off for the film festival.)
Happy Thursday!

Kristina, just a note to let you know it’s a good idea to use a pretty good quality shampoo and conditioner for color when you are dying your hair red. Because red fades so quickly. I’ve been dying my hair red for about 4 years now and I love it. But in order to keep it at it’s best it needs some TLC. I prefer biolage, redken and tigi. (In that order). And as far as dyes go, what did you use? I’ve found that I love redken dyes, because of how beautifully they fade out (looks so natural), but they can be a little hard to get. Hope I could help!

Rachel, thank you for the suggestions! I grabbed some shampoo meant for red hair, but after getting home I noticed it has sulfates in it, which I’ve heard fades red dye faster. I’ve known that red hair fades and especially dyed hair needs special attention, but it’s good to have suggestions for what to use! I wasn’t really sure what brands to look for. I might go back to Sally’s Beauty Supply to get shampoo meant for dyed-red hair!
I used Loreal Hicolor for Dark Hair; I read online that it was really good for bringing dark hair like mine up to a good red. I’m not sure how fast it fades, but I do plan to refresh my hair every three weeks or so, depending on roots and fading! I also don’t wash my hair very often, which I know helps, and I plan to use cold water to wash so that it won’t fade very long. I’ll have to see if Sally’s Beauty Supply has Redkin dyes, once I get the color I want and don’t need to add bleach any longer!

It’s going to be hard to find what you want at Sally’s. They really only sell knock offs of the salon brands. I used them for probably close to a year to a year and a half. You’ll also want to masks sure what you’re buying isn’t past the expiration date (yes, shampoo and conditioner have expiration dates. Buzzard, huh?).
I’m not familiar with the Loreal hicolor, but I have had good experiences with Loreal before. Watch your hair if you’re going to dye it that frequently. I am able to typically go about two months before I redye, but hair can be different depending on the person. Cold water = good. 🙂
Sally’s doesn’t sell Redkin dyes. I am friends with a hair dresser and she takes me to her supply store, where I can purchase things because she has her cosmetology license. Otherwise I wouldn’t be able to get any without going to a salon. :/

Oh, good to know! You can find Redken products on Amazon; maybe I’ll try that. And I will definitely be checking the dates on things!
I’m not too worried about re-dyeing my hair after a month, my roots do grow in really fast (when I had blonde hair, after a month I had really, really visible roots. It was bad!) so I know I’ll at least have to do a touch-up of my roots. But we’ll see!

I do the same thing with my eyebrows! You can basically make them any color if they’re not super dark. It’s great. I don’t think these bangs look overly short on you either. My hairdresser mom says to always start from the middle when you cut your own bangs. Not sure if you did that or not but I figured I’d pass the tip along!
Also I love this plaid skirt you’re wearing here. It’s so cute with your new red hair!

Actually, I think your bangs look really cute like this. I get a sort of rocker-chic feel from the pictures–maybe it’s just the outfit adding to it, I dunno. But I like it. The red hair is soooo awesome. I wish I had the courage to dye my hair haha 🙂

I think the plaid skirt is really rocker-chic. It’s a skirt I was going to sell but I’ve worn it twice now and I like it a lot, so I miiight keep it. Nothing has sold from my shop yet anyway, so y’know. That just makes it okay to keep stuff, right? Haha!
You should totally dye your hair a crazy color at least once! I think going blonde a few years ago was the scariest color for me, because it was a HUGE drastic change with lots of bleach. But red isn’t as scary because I’ve done it before (darker, but still…). It’s so fun having a new haircolor, though!

Awww, I love the bangs! But that could be because that’s exactly the length I want my bangs when I get them trimmed in a week or so. 😛 But regardless, you’re still rocking the look. 🙂 Love it!

That film festival sounds awesome!! I can’t believe it’s been a year since the last time you did it, I remember that film, it was so cute. 🙂

I know, I can’t believe it either! Last time we did it, I was pregnant. Crazy! This year’s is going to be SO good, and I cannot wait to share when it’s all done and we’re allowed to publicize the film! (we have to wait until after the October showing at the film festival to share it publicly.)

I don’t cut my bangs anymore but I used to when I was in school and boy did I mess them up!! I don’t even want to think about how bad they were lol!! You look great and like you said it’s just hair and it’ll grow back 🙂

Haha, yeah, mine usually are shorter than I intended, because somehow I always cut them crooked! Oh well! At least they aren’t catastrophically short, just not exactly how I wanted them to be!

I love how your hair frames your face. Your bangs look fine, but remember to start long and trim shorter next time and if your hair is wet, it will shrink up a little.
Amber
I love your outfit, especially the skirt <3

Have fun doing the film fest! I did the 48 hour film festival twice back when I lived in Cincinnati. It was crazy, but fun! Also, your hair looks super cute red…

Did you never link to that film last year? I don’t remember ever seeing it! But it’s lovely. . . . I love the angles. Wow.
